Name: Chris Surgeoner
Age: 16 (3/4)
Occupation: Student
Years in Triathlon: 5
Triathlon highlights or recent performances:
This year’s World Triathlon Age Group Championships in Hyde Park, London finishing first of the 5 man Ireland team in the 16-19 age group. The atmosphere was amazing and it was great fun racing against people from all over the world. I will never forget the experience.
Current Goal:
To fall off less often in this autumn’s Cyclocross races.
Next Year’s Goal: To beat Rhodri in a 10 mile TT and to survive the West Bay swim.
Favourite Training Sessions:
Alistair and Rhodri’s brick sessions and Anne’s swim session on Wednesday mornings (how I long for those early starts during my summer holidays). I also love time trialling and road racing.
What made you take up the sport?
I have been swimming from a very young age and was bought a road bike as a present when I was 11. My first event was a Duathlon at age 11, held in Coleraine.
I was coming dead last against all the older adults and morale was at an absolute low. I was only starting my second 2.2k run leg when the majority of the other competitors had already finished. However one kind, female competitor from TTC (after having completed the race herself) ran alongside me offering encouragement the whole way to the finish. Thank you Alison! I joined Triangle soon after.
Favourite food/drink:
Toffee Crisps and Lucozade Sport are hard to beat.
Favourite bit of kit/equipment:
My Planet X Stealth - Speed Machine
Who do you see as your main rivals?
There are lots of really good Juniors in Triathlon here and I will try my best to be competitive (most weeks) against them!
